Feeding your Bernedoodle puppy: Two things are important for standard sized bernedoodles. First make sure that whatever food you choose is for “large breeds,” this is because the nutrients, especially calcium levels have been limited to prevent problems when they are adults. Secondly, bernedoodles are known for having problems with chicken, so I would recommend avoiding pet food with that as the main ingredient. I would also sign up to receive updates from the Dogfood advisor.
The puppy food that we feed is Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy.
GROOMING
Let’s face it grooming a doodle can be a challenge! Whitney at Doodle Doods does a great job with explaining how to care for your doodle’s hair. Following some of these simple steps and procedures can make the difference between having a bush beautiful doodle and a skinny shaven doodle. The Upkeep program alone provides methods that have saved me hours of brushing, and Mojo doesn’t give me the stink eye anymore.
Dog Brushes: Remember regular grooming is important for the health of your puppy. While I hate the price of the Chris Christen Big Dog Slicker Brush, I will have to admit that it is the best. Not only because of the long bristles but also because the wire bristles are rounded to prevent scratching your doodle’s skin. We also like the Burt’s Bees slicker palm held model for a quick brushing. It seems more natural to use the palm of your hand than a brush.
Also don’t forget a good greyhound comb. Again look for rounded tips like the one selected to the right.
Bath Time
Puppy shampoo, there are tons of choices. The one that we use is Burt’s Bees tearless 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner. Tearless is important in my opinion to help insure a positive bath experience. Also two in one mean less time bathing a plus for the pup and his parent. Burt Bees has several different shampoos to choose from. Also, also I would highly recommend a hair dryer for dogs, they allow for more air flow and better temperature control. and the hose keeps the noise of the dryer away from your puppy.
Play and Training
While Mojo and Kenzie seem to have been bred to sit around and be oversized huggable lapdogs. They also enjoy exercise, playing , and training sessions.
Leash- Sometimes there are innovations that can make a world of difference. We have found the six foot KONG shock absorbing hands-free dog leash to be on of the most comfortable and versatile leashes on the market. It has the shorter lead for more control and the longer lead adoption. the lounger lead also has a bungy section which lets Mojo know when he is getting to the end of his rope allowing him to stop before his neck is jerked around. The upper handle also has a metal adjustable clip that can go around your waist for hands-free operation, or be quickly clipped to an object. It even includes reflective tape for walking at night. There is a much better price at Pets Smart then through the Kong Amazon store.
Toys and Bones
Bernedoodles a known for being “determined chewers.” We have found that these products last longer. However, you still have to what them, especially the bones for pieces coming off that could hurt your doodle if they swallowed them. I have heard that the nylon bones can be sanded down to remove the sharp pieces. The sharps pieces can cause gastric problems… but so can a piece of furniture or shoe.
Outward Hound extreme chewers collection and Tuffy MEGA -tiger tested makes toys that have lasted the longest for our doodles.
Pupford has a training program and high quality high value treats like freeze dried chicken, beef, rabbit or jerkies.
